Bottom-Champalimaud Foundation in Lisbon

The Champalimaud Foundation is a private, non-profit institution based in Lisbon, Portugal. Founded in 2004 according to the wishes of the late entrepreneur António de Sommer Champalimaud, it specializes in biomedical research and clinical cancer care.

At the heart of its mission is an internationally recognized oncology center that closely integrates research and patient care. The state-of-the-art cancer center includes a fully equipped clinic where patients receive both outpatient and inpatient care, including surgical procedures. Cutting-edge research findings are directly incorporated into diagnostics and therapy – a translational approach that is unique worldwide.

A particular focus is placed on the surgical treatment of tumors in the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, peritoneum, and soft tissues (sarcomas). In the field of pancreatic diseases, the center offers comprehensive pancreatic treatment – from advanced surgical procedures to multidisciplinary therapy concepts. The surgical department specializes in minimally invasive and robot-assisted pancreatic surgery, enabling gentler procedures and shorter recovery times for patients.

Since April 1, 2023, Professor Markus W. Büchler has been leading the Department of Surgical Oncology and the newly established Botton-Champalimaud pancreatic center. This center combines cutting-edge technology, international expertise, and patient-centered care to provide the best possible outcomes for individuals with pancreatic cancer.

The Champalimaud Foundation sets itself apart from traditional research institutions by focusing not only on scientific discoveries but also on their immediate application in patient care – with the aim of bringing medical innovations swiftly and effectively into clinical practice.
